We set out early this morning on an optional excursion to the Cu Chi Tunnels. This time we headed north of the city and travelled about an hour to get to our destination. The area of Cu Chi is where a vast underground network of Tunnels was built as a defence against the French and then later expanded for use during the Vietnam war. It is here that the North Vietnamese waged Gorilla warfare against the South.
It was extremely interesting to see the underground meeting rooms, kitchens and living areas. We also saw demonstrations of some very scary trapdoors and traps. The Tunnels were really small. Some of them were made larger to allow tourists to crawl through them. Once again, this was something that my claustrophobia kept me from doing but some people were brave enough to crawl through them.
We also got the opportunity to shoot an AK-47. I really hate guns but couldn't pass up that chance!! It was a bit scary but still pretty cool (and noisy)!
We got back to the city at 11:30 and we had some time to shower, pack up our suitcases and grab some lunch before heading to the airport. When we arrived at the airport we found out that our 4:30 flight was delayed one hour, so we left at 5:30, headed for Da Nang. The flight was only one hour. When we arrived in Da Nang we bussed straight to our resort at Hoi An. By this time it was 8:00 pm so we went straight to dinner and then off to bed!!
